Many voices in the CGIAR are calling for a new emphasis in the work of the international agricultural research centers on knowledge sharing, learning, and innovation. Over the last year or so, the Knowledge Sharing (KS) Project of the CGIAR's ICT-KM Program has demonstrated concretely how we can collectively bring about this change. The project focused mainly on major meetings as an opportunity for introducing Knowledge Sharing (KS) attitudes, methods and tools into our organizations. Meeting participants experiment and discover new ways of establishing collegial relationships and help them to evolve towards a more creative scientific collaboration. This magazine-style report documents the four pilot initiatives carried out by the KS Project, jointly by CIAT, CIFOR, CIMMYT, and IWMI, in partnership with the Bellanet International Secretariat at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Canada, from around mid-2004 to late 2005. It is designed to spark the interest of all those in the CGIAR centers and their partner organizations who seek to make better use of the scientific and related knowledge available within the global agricultural research community. 24 p. 21.5 x 27.5 cm.

Territorial Approach to Rural Agro-enterprise Development: Increasing the Competitiveness of Market Chains for Smallholder Producers. Manual 3. This guide is the fourth in a series of documents designed to address the entrepreneurial development needs of institutions that support rural communities. Having selected a product for enterprise development, using the tools in Guide 4 of this series, this guide focuses on the methods used analysis of a specific market chain. The methods in this guide are rapid and therefore use key informants as sources of information and participatory, such that representatives from the farmers groups are involved in gathering primary information from people along the market chain. The approach not only considers information on changes in price, quality and quantity along the chain, through intermediaries, but also takes a wider view of the market chain by including an evaluation of the efficiency of the flow of goods and services along the chain and the level of business organization of the services that support the chain. The method highlights critical points in the market chain that can be strengthened to the benefit of producers but also of traders and retailers. At the heart of this manual is the concept of how to shift from a production or supply chain into a "value chain". The manual is divided into 10 modules, each structured with guiding questions, concepts, appropriate tools, practical examples, and a review of the themes introduced. The final output of this manual is a business plan which can be used to develop into a new agro-enterprise venture. 117 p. 21.5 x 27 cm. Also available in Spanish.
