Cassava is a dietary staple and significant cash crop throughout the tropical world. Its enormous capacity to adapt to adverse climatic and edaphic conditions makes it an ideal food-security crop, the more so today as soils decline in fertility, inputs become more costly, and agricultural subsidies are withdrawn. To meet demand from growing populations and, thus, maintain its chief role as a food-security crop, cassava yields must increase. Yet, despite this crop's essential role in the world scene, significant cassava research is conducted only at CIAT, IITA, and certain other institutes. This publication, aimed at researchers, extension workers, and students, is the first to deal with cassava on a worldwide basis. The 15 chapters deal with the crop's origins, distribution, and economic importance in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific; botany, physiology, and agronomy; genetics and crop improvement; crop protection; and end uses.
