[Neotropical Fruits: Their History and Dispersion] This work compiles almost all information on useful Neotropical fruit species that has accumulated since the Spanish Conquest (16th century). The book describes more than 430 fruit-bearing species, identified since the Conquest, as growing in the inter-tropical zone of the Americas. The author, Victor Manuel Patiño (1918-2001), a genial, self-taught naturalist from Zarzal, Department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, devoted his life, both within his country and abroad (where he was adviser and consultant to museums and botanical gardens), to the study and promotion of the flora and fauna of more than 25 Neotropical countries. As stated in the preface, this publication elaborates and updates the five volumes published by Patiño between 1963 and 1970, "Plantas Cultivadas y Animales Domésticos en América Equinoccial" (Cultivated Plants and Domestic Animals in Equinoctial America). The complete works of this author total more than 29 titles, which are kept as a special collection in CIAT's library. Each of the work's 23 chapters is devoted to a distinct botanical family of important fruit trees. The book itself is in two parts: (1) fruits for direct consumption, and (2) fruits for food processing. Considerable information is given on the coconut, peach palm, and cacao. Two of the seven appendices contain indexes of the common, scientific, and Indo-American names of the fruit trees described. For the peach palm only, more than 300 names were collected! These indexes facilitate quick consultation. This work, copublished by CIAT and the Asociacion Hortifruticola de Colombia (ASOHOFRUCOL), could become a major reference for fruit tree breeders and farmers of the Latin American tropics. 655 p. 17.5 x 24 cm.
