Homologue is a computer program that assists scientists in identifying homologous environments throughout the tropical world. A farmer might ask, "What crop can I grow on this field?" Homologue will take the latitude, longitude, and elevation of the field, and basic data on the soil characteristics, and map out wherever else in the tropics is like the field. Agricultural scientists can then advise on possibilities based on what crops are grown in these areas. A plant breeder may ask, "I've bred this new variety that does very well at site X, where else will it be useful?" Homologue will do the same job and produce a probability map of the places where the variety might yield well. Homologue does not just stop there. It can analyze a number of sites where a variety or crop does well and produce the envelope of environments where good results might be expected, shown as a probability map. This is useful when the crop adaptation is not tied to a specific climate. Raspberries do well in Scotland and Bogotá, Colombia. Combining the two environments gives a more complete rendition of the range of the raspberry crop. Manual, 100 p. 16 x 22 cm + CD-ROM.
